RMS Titanic sank in April 1912 in the North Atlantic, and its wreck now lies about 3,800 meters down on the seafloor. Since its discovery in 1985, researchers have found that metal-eating bacteria such as Halomonas titanicae steadily consume the steel hull, creating rusticle formations that weaken the structure. Based on recent studies, scientists estimate that the wreck could completely deteriorate and collapse by around 2030, leaving little more than a rust stain on the ocean floor.
