In 2010, divers salvaged over a hundred bottles of 170 year old champagne from a shipwreck on the seafloor of the Baltic Sea. The bottles, which lay preserved in cold, dark water since the 19th century, still held drinkable wine when researchers opened them. Scientists analyzed the liquid to study its chemistry and carefully allowed themselves to taste only about 1 milliliter each. They reported that, despite its age, the champagne still tasted surprisingly good.
