In the early 1990s, Canadian filmmaker James Cameron, an avid wreck diver, became fascinated with RMS Titanic and regarded it as the Mount Everest of shipwrecks. After learning that other crews had already filmed the wreck for the IMAX documentary Titanica, he went to 20th Century Fox with a Titanic feature film idea so a studio would finance deep-sea expeditions to the real ship. He later explained that he made Titanic not because he especially wanted to make that movie, but because he wanted to dive to the shipwreck 12,500 feet down in the North Atlantic and sold the dives to the studio as a marketing hook.
