As heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand was widely disliked across the empire. His marriage to a woman without sufficient royal blood broke with Habsburg tradition and offended conservative aristocrats. Politically, he wanted to restructure the dual monarchy into three kingdoms and give Slavs equal status, which alarmed Austrian conservatives and angered many Hungarians. Pan-Slavic nationalists also rejected his plan, leaving him distrusted by nearly every major faction in the empire.
