During the late development of Super Mario Bros. in the 1980s, Nintendo’s team discovered that players found the Koopa Troopa turtle enemies too difficult for beginners. To give players a simpler, easy-to-defeat enemy, the developers decided to add Goombas, the now-iconic mushroom creatures. Memory space in the game was almost full, so the team created a single small sprite and simply flipped it back and forth to make a walking animation.
