In 2001, English novelist Philip Pullman told an interviewer that he was “trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief.” In 2002, Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens seized on that remark and branded him “the most dangerous author in Britain.” Pullman had written his His Dark Materials trilogy as a deliberate rebuttal to what he saw as the heavy Christian message in C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia.
