The kangaroo rat, found in the deserts of North America, can survive its entire life without consuming liquid water. Instead, it gets almost all of its moisture from the seeds it eats and from metabolic water produced as it breaks down food. Its kidneys concentrate urine extremely well, and it loses very little water through breathing or waste.
