After Sergeant John Raymond Rice, a Native American soldier, was killed in action during the Korean War, his body was returned to the United States for burial. A Sioux City cemetery refused to bury him because of his heritage, denying him a grave alongside white soldiers. When President Harry Truman heard what had happened, he intervened and ordered Rice buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors between two generals.
