All Red Line Cables Empire

From 1902, the British Empire linked much of its territory with the "All Red Line," a global system of electrical telegraphs that connected far-flung colonies to London. Laying the longest section, from Canada to a Pacific island, required about 8,000 tons of undersea cable. Once the network was complete, engineers calculated that it would take 49 separate cable cuts to isolate the United Kingdom from its dominions.
