Pope Leo Confronts Attila

In 452, while Attila the Hun was threatening Rome, Pope Leo I went out from the city to meet him in person, probably near Mantua in northern Italy. Leo acted as an envoy to plead for Italy and tried to persuade the Hun king to spare the city. The exact words spoken at their meeting are unknown, but after it ended, Attila withdrew his forces and never invaded Rome.
