In ancient Greece, engineers piped water into large communal gymnasium showers that both rich and poor used, with bars on the walls to hang their clothes. The setup let bathers wash quickly and efficiently, much like a modern locker room. Romans adopted the practice and carried it across the empire, even to Britain, but daily bathing habits later faded after Rome fell.
