Offstage Deaths in Greek Theater

In classical Greek theater, playwrights kept deaths out of sight, so killings almost never happened on stage. After the fatal act occurred offstage, a messenger entered to describe what happened, and the body appeared only afterward for the audience to witness. The convention focused attention on words, judgment, and consequences rather than on staged violence.
