Pornai and Hetairai Explained

In ancient Greece, prostitution was divided into two classes: the Pornai and the Hetairai. The Pornai worked publicly, often serving many men at once in brothels or on the streets. The Hetairai, however, were educated courtesans who entertained wealthy men with conversation, culture, and intimacy, making them companions as much as lovers.
