In 2001, hair stylist Janet Stephens visited a museum and studied the intricate hairstyles carved on Greek and Roman statues. She realized that historians were wrong to describe these towering styles as wigs and went on to recreate them herself using real hair. She then published her methods and findings in The Journal of Roman Archaeology, transforming herself from a working stylist into a hairstyle archaeologist presenting her reconstructions to scholars.
