In 1927, school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe carried out the deadliest mass murder at a U.S. elementary school when he detonated explosives at Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, Michigan. Before the school blast, he had already murdered his wife at their farm and set incendiary devices that destroyed his house and outbuildings.
The explosions at the school killed 38 children and 6 adults and injured at least 58 others, and Kehoe himself died when he set off dynamite packed into his truck. In the aftermath, investigators found a wooden sign wired to his farm fence with his final message stenciled on it: "Criminals are made, not born."
