In 2002, 41-year-old John Allen Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo went on a cross-country killing spree that began with shootings and robberies in states like Washington, Arizona, Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia. They then moved to the Washington metropolitan area and, over three weeks in October, randomly shot civilians in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia in attacks that shut down gas stations, schools, and parking lots.
In all, the pair murdered 17 people and wounded 10 others between February and October 2002. Police finally arrested them at a Maryland rest stop, and courts sentenced Muhammad to death and Malvo to multiple life terms in prison.
