American serial killer Arthur Shawcross first went to prison in New York in 1972 after he raped and murdered 10-year-old Jack Blake and 8-year-old Karen Ann Hill, but he served only about 12 years of a 25-year sentence before his 1987 release for what officials called good behavior.
After getting out, he moved to the Rochester area and began killing again, targeting women he met on the streets. Between 1988 and 1989, he murdered 11 women, and investigators later linked him to a twelfth victim as well. Police finally arrested Shawcross in January 1990, and a court sentenced him to life imprisonment for the series of post-release murders.
