In 1970 in Hammond, Indiana, Linda Darby murdered her husband, Charles, by poisoning him, then shooting him and burning his body, a crime that earned her a life sentence in the Indiana Women’s Prison. Two years into that sentence, she climbed over a barbed-wire fence, escaped, and disappeared, eventually starting over in Pulaski, Tennessee, under the name Linda McElroy.
For 35 years she lived a quiet life under her new identity while hiding the fact that she was a convicted murderer on the run. In 2007 authorities finally located her, arrested her, and sent her back to Indiana to continue serving her life sentence for Charles’s murder.
