In 1999, 15-year-old Jonathan James used his home computer to hack into NASA's systems. He accessed source code that NASA used to control parts of the International Space Station's life support environment. To investigate and fix the breach, NASA shut down affected computers for 21 days, a pause that cost thousands of dollars. U.S. authorities later identified James as the intruder and charged him as a juvenile.
