Human ears can't tell which direction deep bass frequencies come from. At low frequencies, the ear gets few directional cues, so the brain can't locate the source. That's why home theaters tuck subwoofers behind furniture and car systems hide them in trunks. The main speakers handle the directional mids and highs, while the sub can deliver the rumble from almost anywhere.
