People can't legally pump their own gas in New Jersey. Since 1949, the state's Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act has required trained attendants to dispense fuel, and that rule still stands. Oregon used to share the restriction, but a 2023 law legalized self-serve statewide while keeping some full-service requirements. Today New Jersey is the only state with a blanket ban on self-serve.
