Deaf Britons and deaf Americans can't understand each other's signs. British Sign Language and American Sign Language developed separately, with ASL drawing heavily from French Sign Language, so they use different grammar and finger alphabets (BSL is two-handed; ASL is one-handed). The result is that the two are distinct and require learning the other system to be mutually intelligible.
