United States Housing Corporation (WWI)

During World War I, the United States created the United States Housing Corporation in 1918 under the Department of Labor to house war production workers near shipyards and arsenals. In about two years it launched over 83 projects across 26 states, developing 5,033 acres into neighborhoods for more than 170,000 people. The program set federal neighborhood planning standards that influenced later U.S. housing design.
