Gothic "Lesbian Vampire" Archetype

In the 19th century, gothic writers used the lesbian vampire archetype to depict same-sex desire under restrictive Victorian norms, with Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella Carmilla setting the template. Early cinema carried it forward: Universal's Dracula's Daughter (1936) implied female-on-female predation, and Hammer's Karnstein films (1970-71) pushed the theme before censors cut it back.
