Three of the five likely oldest rivers on earth are in Appalachia. The French Broad, New, and Susquehanna Rivers appear among the world's oldest, each estimated at roughly 340-260 million years. Geologists note they fully dissect the Appalachian core formed during the Alleghanian orogeny, which helps date their courses.
