From 1983 to 1989 in Vienna, nurse's aides Waltraud Wagner, Maria Gruber, Irene Leidolf, and Stephanija Meyer murdered patients at a geriatric nursing facility as they enjoyed playing God and holding life and death in their hands. They killed by overdosing morphine or forcing water into victims' lungs. Investigators closed in after a doctor overheard them bragging about a fresh killing in a local tavern, and the aides ultimately confessed to 49 murders, but they may have been responsible for as many as 200 deaths. By 2008, all four had been released from prison.
