In 1752, a Scottish soldier named Ewen McDonald stabbed a man in Newcastle's Bigg Market during a pub fight and was convicted of murder. After his hanging, officials sent his body to Surgeons' Hall for dissection. To their shock, McDonald revived on the table, and the surgeon, fearing punishment for using a living man in dissection, grabbed a wooden mallet and struck him until he was dead.
