Kari's Law and the Hotel Murder

In 2013, in Alexandria, Virginia, Kari Hunt was murdered by her husband in a hotel room while their 9-year-old daughter tried to dial 911 four times. The calls failed because the hotel phone system required guests to dial 9 before any outside line-so dialing 911 translated to 9911, which didn't connect. After Kari's death, Congress and the FCC enacted Kari's Law, which requires that hotel phones allow direct dialing of 911 without a prefix.
