The Church Killing of Alberta King

The Church Killing of Alberta King

In 1974, Alberta King, mother of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., was shot and killed while playing the organ at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. The church was the same pulpit where her husband, Martin Luther King Sr., and her son had preached. The assailant, Marcus Wayne Chenault, entered the church sanctuary and opened fire during Sunday services. He shot her because, according to him, "all Christians are my enemies," and Black ministers were a menace to Black people.
