In 1963, white civil rights activist William Lewis Moore set out on a 400-mile solo march from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi. Carrying a letter addressed to the Mississippi governor urging him to accept racial integration, Moore walked along highways wearing a sign reading "Equal rights for all." Two days into his journey, he was found shot dead beside a rural Alabama road. His murder remains unsolved.
