Around 1900 BCE, the Sumerians of southern Iraq etched humanity's oldest known joke onto a clay tablet, and it was a fart joke. The line read: "Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap." Crude but timeless, it shows that even 4,000 years ago, people found bodily humor irresistible.
