Frederick Winslow Taylor, known as the father of scientific management, also inspired the open-plan office layout. Drawing from the factory floor design, he envisioned workers grouped closely in large, open rooms where efficiency could be easily monitored. Managers, meanwhile, observed from enclosed offices above or beside them.
