America's Forgotten "Ugly Laws"

From 1867 to 1974, several U.S. cities enforced so-called "ugly laws" that banned people with visible disabilities or severe disfigurements from public view. San Francisco's 1867 ordinance made it illegal for anyone "diseased, maimed, mutilated, or deformed" to appear in public-except to demonstrate their need for reform.
