In 2012, James "Jimmy" Zhong, a Georgia man with early ties to Bitcoin, discovered a coding flaw in the Silk Road darknet marketplace. The bug in its withdrawal system allowed him to repeatedly move funds between accounts and withdraw far more Bitcoin than he deposited. Zhong ultimately siphoned off 51,680 BTC (worth $3.4 billion), which remained hidden for nearly a decade while he lived lavishly and kept his identity secret. In 2021, federal agents uncovered his stash during a raid in Gainesville, Georgia, and he later received a one-year prison sentence for one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history.
