Brazil's Bugle Blunder at Pirajá

Brazil's Bugle Blunder at Pirajá

During Brazil's war of independence, the Battle of Pirajá (1822) turned on what may have been a bugle blunder. Legend has it that when ordered to sound a retreat, the Brazilian bugler mistakenly played the call for a cavalry charge despite there being no cavalry present. The Portuguese, convinced they were about to be overrun, panicked and retreated, giving the Brazilians momentum to secure victory in Bahia. While historians debate how much of this tale is fact versus patriotic myth, the story remains one of the most famous battlefield anecdotes of Brazil's independence.
