Joan of Arc's famous name hides a translation twist because there is no such place named "Arc" at all. Her French name, Jeanne d'Arc, uses d' (of) as part of her surname, Darc (or D'Arc), not as a birthplace. The mistranslation transformed a family name into a geographical "of Arc," giving the impression she came from somewhere she never did. Over time, this slight change in meaning helped cement the legendary aura of her name.
