In Isaiah 14:12, the Hebrew word "helel" means "morning star" or "shining one," not a personal name. In the 17th-century King James Version, translators rendered this as Lucifer, a Latin term meaning "light-bringing." Over time, that mistranslation turned Lucifer into a villainous proper name in Christian lore. Originally, Isaiah's prophecy is better understood as referring to a fallen Babylonian king, not Satan.
