In 1998, Britney Spears released "(Hit Me) Baby One More Time," a song written by Swedish producer Max Martin. Martin intended the chorus to mean "call me one more time," but mistranslated the slang "hit me" into English, where it sounded more like a reference to physical violence. The awkward wording confused some listeners, yet the single went on to top charts worldwide.
