London Markets Closing After Centuries

London's Billingsgate Fish Market and Smithfield Meat Market, both centuries-old institutions, will close permanently in 2028 (as of September 2025). The Corporation of London decided against relocating them to a new site in Dagenham, ending their long histories as centers of trade. Smithfield has operated since the 10th century, while Billingsgate dates back to the 16th century, making their closure the end of nearly a millennium of tradition.
