Mufflers and Silencers Same Invention

Car mufflers and firearm silencers rely on the same principle of dissipating explosive gases through chambers and baffles to reduce noise. Both inventions came from Hiram Percy Maxim, an American inventor and son of the creator of the Maxim gun. He patented the firearm suppressor in 1909 and soon after adapted the same technology to design mufflers for automobiles.
