Black Agnes Defends Dunbar Castle

In 1338, Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar, defended Dunbar Castle against a five-month siege by a much larger English force. When her enemies threatened to execute her captured brother unless she surrendered, she responded that his death would benefit her since she was his heir. Her fearless defiance and tactical skill ultimately forced the English to abandon the siege, securing her place in Scottish legend as "Black Agnes."
