In 1992, Vasili Mitrokhin, the KGB's chief archivist, defected to the West carrying 25,000 pages of handwritten notes. His records detailed five decades of Soviet intelligence operations around the globe, exposing espionage tactics, assassinations, and influence campaigns. The trove, known as the Mitrokhin Archive, became one of the most important intelligence leaks of the 20th century.
