Great Whiskey Fire Dublin 1875

In 1875, Dublin witnessed a bizarre and deadly disaster now known as the Great Whiskey Fire. A huge blaze broke out in Malone's bonded warehouse, sending 5,000 barrels of whiskey bursting into the streets. The flaming liquor formed a six-inch-deep river of whiskey that surged through the city, destroying nearby tenement buildings and factories.

Strangely, none of the 13 victims died from burns or smoke inhalation. Instead, curious onlookers scooped up the flowing liquor and drank it-only to succumb to alcohol poisoning.
