Churchill's Polite Declaration of War

On December 8, 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor, Britain declared war on Japan. Because Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden was en route to Moscow, Winston Churchill personally drafted the formal declaration. Churchill later reflected on its wording, remarking, "Some people did not like this ceremonial style. But after all, when you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite."
