In 2017, Syrian seafarer Mohammad Aisha was abandoned on the container ship MV Aman after it was detained near Suez, Egypt, when its owners went bankrupt. With no power, fresh water, or crew, he was forced to live alone aboard the vessel for nearly four years, relying on locals who rowed out food to him. He was finally released in April 2021, after international pressure secured his freedom.
