Marathon's Goat Sacrifice Tradition

Before the Battle of Marathon, Athenians vowed to sacrifice a goat for every Persian killed. After recording 6,400 enemy deaths, they sacrificed 500 goats annually to their goddess Artemis Agrotera until fulfilling the vow.
