About 1 in 200 Icelanders (and some other Northern Europeans) carry a rare A673T variant in the APP gene that significantly reduces both Alzheimer's disease risk and age related cognitive decline. Studies in mice have confirmed that this "Icelandic mutation" lowers amyloid plaque formation and neuroinflammation-suggesting it could guide future therapeutic strategies against Alzheimer's.
