Vincent D'Onofrio gained 70 pounds (32 kg) for the role of Pvt. Leonard Lawrence in "Full Metal Jacket" (1987). Initially written as a "skinny, ignorant redneck," director Stanley Kubrick decided the character would have more impact if he was big and clumsy.
