In 2002, scientists from Germany and the UK discovered the giant volcano sponge (Anoxycalyx joubini) in Antarctica's Ross Sea at depths of 15 to 144 meters. Believed to be over 10,000 years old, this sponge is considered one of the longest-living known animals on Earth due to its slow growth in the cold, high-pressure environment.
