Close Discovery Claims in Antarctica

Despite Antarctica remaining undiscovered for millennia, only three days separated the first two claims to its discovery. In January 1820, Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and his crew aboard the "Vostok" claimed to have discovered Antarctica, just three days before British naval officer Edward Bransfield, who landed on the Antarctic Peninsula during his expedition on the "Triton." Both expeditions are considered the first recorded sightings of the continent.
